Problem opening excel files attached to emails?

I only use yahoo email seldom outlook or outlook express. when i click on an excel attachment on an email the virus checker clears it for downloading. i then chose the 'open' immediately option and the attachment appear to down load to my machine. excel programme then opens up but i get a report that excel cannot locate the temp file. however, if i 'save' the attachment i can open it in excel with no problem. i don't have this problem with word files, they open without being 'saved' first. i run bullguard v7.0 virus checker and pc doctor. this has only started to happen recently. any ideas will be welcomed.
Answer
I am not sure why you should be having this problem because i have seldom encountered. however, i would suggest that you try saving a spreadsheet in csv format, and sending that as an attachment and see if you can open that. csv in case you don't know is a generic form which enables a spreadsheet to be opened in any spreadsheet program, like an rtf file for a word processing program. on the other hand, could it be something as simple as different versions of excel, because with 2007 unless you've compatibility feature, you cannot open 2007 files in earlier versions. could this be the problem?
