Excel database?

Hello, does someone know of a way of uploading data from an excel file (e.g. through some vb add-in function) so that it's accessible to any other file in the same excel session through a customised add-in function? the data would get wiped out from memory when the user closes his/her excel session but it would be easy enough to reload it in the next session. the important thing is that it would do away with links between files (awful) access or other external databases (unwiedly). i used to do this 10 years ago but forgot how to do it. thanks for your help.
