Powerpoint help?

I'm trying to insert a sound onto a powerpoint slide however i keep getting the following message: 'powerpoint could not insert a sound from the selected file' the sound file that i'm trying to insert is a 'windows media audio file'. i'm assuming that this file type isn't compatible but i'm wondering what is and how should i convert my sound files. help.

I can't remember if powerpoint recognises mp3's or not; anyway audacity is a neat little freeware program that will act as a sound recorder; let you edit tracks; and convert files. select file - export as wav, then file - export as mp3. one of those should work! http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ -audacity music tool.
